Why wouldn't the NY Times capitalize the letter "M" in the word Marines?

The New York Times is not against the military or fighting, nor have they endorsed it. However, the Times follows the AP style guide profusely, and the style guide does not have a rule to capitalize such a term. This is not out of disrespect, this is a long-followed tradition.
