So.. today was the first day i got my period for the first time! Help?

So i checked it about ten minutes ago and its bleeding little, but steady.. im wearing a pad right now but i dont know if i should attempt using a tampon for such a light flow.. expecially since im not going swimming or anything, but should i? Oh and i just got it today so please give me some pointers and stuff too, thank you!! :)
