Fiat Bravo gets stuck in gear?

I have an approx 2000 Fiat Bravo that occasionally gets stuck in gear, the clutch also gets stuck half way down and so I have no option but to shut off the engine from stopping the car plough into the car in-front or into a busy crossing. This fixes it momentarily until I get to the next set of lights or have to down-shift. It mostly happens when I first start the car, does anyone know what it could be?
